This project is a series of photographs which document various sitting areas across the UAE and region. The term ‘majlis’ comes from the Arabic word Jalasa which literally means ‘to sit’. These sitting areas dictate tradition and culture although transformed and altered over the years and reflect more personal and unique styles and personalities seen in their individual furnishings and presentations. Social ties in the UAE are strong and even though the Majlis has evolved from a room containing very simple settings to sofas and chandeliers it represents a part of our culture that we cannot separate from our lives. In these works, the honest image captured is one based on its content, tradition and the privacy of Emirati life.
