The community theatre in Deira, Dubai, with it’s ginormous coffee pots and dhows presented at the entrance, has always sparked an interest in me. I’ve never attended a performance but as a child we always drove past it on the way home and I was always curious to see what this place offered. It’s simplicity and kitsch sense of décor, emulating cultural icons, has always encapsulated me. This again was another dire need to shed light unto hidden establishments that played a huge role in the evolution of a city. It is through these institutions people came together, connected and expressed their creative selves through a shared love of the art.
